Strength training can leave your muscles feeling tight, tired or sore, particularly after a challenging workout or a new exercise routine. Deep Tissue Massage may help some people feel more comfortable during recovery, but timing and pressure are important.
Why Do Muscles Feel Sore After Training?
After strength training, it is common to experience temporary muscle soreness, stiffness or fatigue. This is often known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, and may appear several hours after exercise.
Normal post-workout soreness usually improves gradually. Sharp pain, significant swelling or difficulty moving may indicate an injury rather than ordinary muscle fatigue.
How May Deep Tissue Massage Help?
Deep Tissue Massage uses slow movements and firm pressure to work on areas of muscular tension. After strength training, it may help to:
* Ease feelings of tightness and stiffness
* Relax overworked muscles
* Improve comfort and mobility
* Support general relaxation
* Help you become more aware of tense areas
Massage does not replace rest, hydration, nutrition or appropriate recovery between workouts.
Should You Book Immediately After the Gym?
A firm Deep Tissue Massage immediately after a very intense workout may feel uncomfortable because the muscles are already fatigued and sensitive.
A gentler treatment may be more suitable on the same day. Stronger pressure can usually be considered once the muscles have had some time to settle, depending on how your body feels.
Always tell your therapist when you last exercised, which muscle groups you trained and whether you are experiencing soreness.
Deep Pressure Should Not Mean Severe Pain
Deep Tissue Massage can feel firm, but it should not cause extreme or sharp pain. Excessive pressure is not necessarily more effective and may leave already tired muscles feeling more irritated.
Communicate with your therapist throughout the treatment so the pressure can be adjusted.
When Should You Avoid Massage?
Postpone massage and seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional if you have:
* Sharp or sudden pain
* Significant swelling or bruising
* A suspected muscle tear or joint injury
* Loss of strength or movement
* Numbness or tingling
* Pain that continues to worsen
Massage should not be used to work through an untreated injury.
